Comet P/2008 T1 Boattini

Il giorno 01/10/2008 sulle pagine del Minor Planet Center sono segnalati vari NEOCP.
Decido di far lavorare il mio telescopio sull' oggetto 8TA4638. segnalato con una magnitudine di circa 18.00, un moto di 0.41"/min a 252 P.A.

Alle ore 19:57:15 UT inizo la sequenza di ripresa.
Le immagini, con tempo di esposizione di 60 secondi, non guidate, vengono acquisite in "automatico", in quanto impegni personali mi portono altrove.
Nelle prime immagini la condensa formatasi sul ccd non mi permette di andare olre la 17.5 mag.
Nonostante la sonmma di varie immagini non riesco a notare nulla di significativo
Continua a riprendere immagini, finalmente qualcosa compare sulla immagine.



Continuo la sequenza al fine di evidenziare il "mosso" di quella manciata di pixel che dovrebbero indicare la presenza dell'oggetto NEOCP.



Trovato!!!
Nonostante il basso segnale riesco ad apprezzare il movimento dell'oggetto.
Carico le misure astrometriche sul programma findord e verifico le misure.... non si sa mai...



Provo ad impostare i parametri per un oggetto cometario, con e=1, ma non riesco a trovare un orbita decente. Faccio altre prove ed i risultati migliori sono per un orbita ellittica. (nell'immagine sopra i risultati di una delle varie prove)

Nel frattempo accade cio che un astroflio si aspetta in queste circostanze...
nell'immagine riprese alle ore 21:02:55 UT c'č qualcosa di strano... NUBI.
Il cielo si copre completamente, continuo a riprendere... il nulla.
E giunto il momento di chiudere i battenti ed andare a casa a verificare meglio i dati



Controllo le stelle presenti sull'immagine e faccio una comparazione tra l'immagine "staccata" sul moto dell'oggetto ed una sommata.
Ho il sospetto che si tratti di una cometina.
Indago sui valori FHWM, ma purtroppo il segnale e troppo poco per evidenzire qualcosa di significativo.

Nel frattempo invio le misure al MPC.. e noto con soddisfazione che sono le PRIME (ovviemente dopo lo scopritore)


Continuo ad analizzare le immagini:



noto un piccolo gruppetto di pixel intorno all'oggetto... mmm potrebbe essere solo un artefatto.
Aspetto...
Alla fine esce la circolare del M.P.E.C. 2008-T30 l'oggetto neocp č la cometa P/2008 T1 (Boattini), la quarta (se non erro) scoperta dall'astronomo italiano in questo anno che osserva dal famoso osservatorio G96 Mt. Lemmon Survey.

Una bella soddisfazione, aver confermato per primo la scoperta di una cometa che porta la firma di un "italiano"!!!

Devo ringraziare, in modo particolare, Enzo ed Emilio Rossi, dell'Associazione Astrofili Alta Valdera , che mi hanno permesso di effettuare questa conferma, sostituendomi presso l'osservatorio B33 di Libbiano in quanto ero atteso per un osservazione pubblica.

COMET P/2008 T1 (BOATTINI)
     A. Boattini reports his discovery of another comet on CCD
images taken with the Mt. Lemmon 1.5-m reflector (discovery
observation tabulated below), the fairly condensed coma being about
10" in diameter, with a fan tail about 60" long spanning p.a. 245-
275 deg (with the brightest tail structure in p.a. 250 deg).  Four
stacked 60-s follow-up unfiltered images with the same telescope by
R. E. Hill on Oct. 2.4 UT show a coma diameter of 10"-12" and a
broad, diffuse tail of length 40"-50" in p.a. about 300 deg.
Following posting on the 'NEOCP' webpage, P. Birtwhistle (Great
Shefford, Berkshire, England, 0.40-m reflector, Oct. 2.1) finds a
diffuse coma of diameter 10", extending 15" in p.a. 248 deg (with a
possible straight tail extending for 150" at the same p.a.).  R.
Ligustri (Talmassons, Udine, Italy, 0.25-m reflector, Oct. 2.2)
reports that seven 300-s co-added exposures show a coma diameter of
about 15".  J. E. McGaha (Tucson, AZ, U.S.A., 0.62-m reflector,
Oct. 2.2) writes that a 240-s exposure shows a bright nuclear
condensation of diameter 5" with a faint coma of diameter 12" and a
faint tail 150" long in p.a. 256 deg.  Images taken by R. Holmes
(Charleston, IL, U.S.A., 0.61-m astrograph, Oct. 2.3) and measured
by H. Devore show a wide tail 2'01" long in p.a. 251.6 deg.  J.
Young (Table Mountain 0.61-m reflector) finds a very small bright
coma of diameter 6" with a hint of a broad, weak, fan-shaped tail
about 16" long spanning 225-310 deg.  E. Guido, Castellammare di
Stabia, Italy, writes that eighty stacked 60-s unfiltered CCD
exposures taken remotely by G. Sostero, P. Camilleri, and himself
with a 0.25-m reflector near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., on Oct. 2.4 show
a coma about 10" in diameter and a broad, fan-shaped tail about 40"
toward p.a. 244 deg.

The available astrometry (including prediscovery Spacewatch
astrometry from Sept. 2 and 21), the following elliptical orbital
elements by B. G. Marsden, and an ephemeris appear on MPEC 2008-T30.
Marsden notes that the comet made a close approach to Jupiter in
Apr. 2003 (minimum distance 0.03 AU).
